The Story of TVORIK Kitchen Caddy – From Cork to Precision Wood

The TVORIK Kitchen Caddy wasn't born as a product. It was born out of frustration.

After years of working as a professional chef — particularly in private residences across the south of France — I had tried nearly every knife storage method available. None of them were efficient, safe, and fast enough — all at the same time.

In a professional kitchen, time is not a luxury.
    Time is currency.

Why Is Knife Storage So Difficult in Professional Kitchens?

Working in private villas meant travelling with my own knives and tools. Every professional chef knows that the contents of your knife bag are the most valuable part of your kit.

    I tried everything.

At one point, I was filling old wooden wine crates with rice and sticking my knives into them. It solved one problem — the blades were protected.

    But it created another.

Rice in a kitchen environment is not hygienic. It absorbs moisture. It traps contaminants. It was not a professional solution.

I tested traditional knife blocks. But they locked me into predetermined, fixed-width slots. As a chef, I need different knives for different tasks — and beyond knives, I carry tweezers, scissors, offset spatulas, whisks, spoons, pens. A standard knife block offered no flexibility.

The most common setup in professional kitchens is a metal tray with a cloth draped over the knives.

But that causes friction. It dulls edges. It increases the risk of cuts. During an intense service, one careless move and a knife slides off the tray.

Then there are magnetic wall strips.

    I never trusted them.

The thought of a knife falling from over 1.5 metres — shattering or injuring someone — was unacceptable to me.

When you invest in handmade knives, like my chef's knife from Leszek Sikoń, you do not take that risk.

    The Turning Point

One evening, after a long service, I sat down with a glass of wine.

Earlier that day, I had chipped the edge of my knife.

    I was furious.

I pulled out a notebook and started sketching.

That sketch became the foundation of the Kitchen Caddy.

The First Prototype — Inspired by Wine and Cork

Living in the south of France, surrounded by rosé and Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the inspiration came naturally.

    Cork.

Natural cork is soft. Safe. Forgiving on a blade's edge.

A large, custom-cut block of cork became the heart of the first Kitchen Caddy prototype. The goal was simple: create a safe knife organizer that wouldn't dull or chip the edges.

I reached out to Piotr, our carpenter, and together we developed the concept.

    We added dedicated spots for:

    • Tweezers
    • Whisks
    • Spatulas
    • Spoons
    • Pens
    • Other precision kitchen tools

The first prototype was functional, raw, and honest. It wasn't about aesthetics. It was about solving a real problem.

For the first year, I was happy.

The Caddy travelled with me. It protected my tools. It kept everything organized.

But as services grew more intense, a problem became clear.

Pushing blades into cork took time.

And during service, time is money.

How Did Precision Wood Replace Cork?

In the middle of a shift, I messaged Piotr.

As a carpenter, his response was short:

    "Evenly spaced wood."

Instead of pressing blades into cork, we would design precision-milled wooden channels that naturally guide the knife in. Faster. Cleaner. More efficient.

We went back to the beginning.

I brought in an architect to turn the sketches and prototype into a refined technical design. The following months were filled with conversations, messages, revisions, and testing — between me, Piotr, and the architect.

    The cork base was removed.

Precision-milled wood became the heart of the design.

The Final TVORIK Kitchen Caddy — A Knife Block Alternative Built for Chefs

The final version reflects everything that years of professional kitchen work taught me.

    Precision-milled wooden channels allow for:

    • Faster knife insertion
    • Smooth extraction
    • Reduced friction
    • Stable blade positioning
    • Long-term durability

The body is crafted from solid oak — the same hardwood used in our TVORIK End Grain Original cutting boards. The layout is optimized for ergonomic workflow.

The tool compartments remained — because a professional kitchen is about more than just knives. And to keep those knives razor-sharp between uses, pairing the Caddy with a TVORIK Stropping leather strop completes the system.

    This is not decoration.

This is a professional knife storage system designed for real kitchens.

    Built to Travel

Today, wherever in the world I cook, the wooden knife holder travels with me.

Sometimes that means paying for excess baggage.

But time saved is money saved.

And protected knives are a protected investment.

    More Than a Product

The TVORIK Kitchen Caddy was not born in comfort.

    It was born from frustration.
    Shaped during service.
    Refined through experience.
    Designed with precision.
    Crafted by artisans.

    It represents one belief:

If you can't trust your tools, you can't perform at the highest level.

    Today, I can.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the Kitchen Caddy different from a traditional knife block?

Traditional knife blocks have fixed-width slots that limit you to specific blade sizes. The Kitchen Caddy uses precision-milled wooden channels that accommodate knives of varying widths, plus dedicated compartments for tweezers, spatulas, whisks, and other kitchen tools — making it a complete workspace organizer, not just knife storage.

What wood is the Kitchen Caddy made from?

The Kitchen Caddy is crafted from solid oak — a dense hardwood valued for its durability, natural grain beauty, and resistance to wear. The same quality oak is used across all TVORIK products, including our End Grain Red cutting boards.

Can the Kitchen Caddy travel safely?

Yes. The Kitchen Caddy was designed by a travelling chef, specifically to be transported. The solid wood construction and snug blade channels keep knives secure during transport, protecting both the edges and surrounding items in your luggage.

Does the Kitchen Caddy protect knife edges?

Absolutely. Unlike magnetic strips (risk of dropping), cloth-covered trays (friction), or loose storage (blade contact), the wooden channels hold each blade individually without touching other knives or hard surfaces. This prevents chipping, dulling, and edge damage.

How many knives fit in the Kitchen Caddy?

The Kitchen Caddy holds multiple chef's knives of different sizes in its precision-milled channels, plus additional compartments for tools like tweezers, scissors, spatulas, and pens. The exact capacity depends on blade widths, but it's designed to hold a full professional chef's toolkit.
